The History of Pepper Canister Church

Last updated: 2025-02-10

The Pepper Canister Church has stood at the heart of Dublin's Georgian quarter for nearly two centuries. Its story begins in 1821 when architect John Bowden was commissioned to design a new chapel of ease for the parish of St Stephen.

Construction (1821–1825)

Work began in 1821 under the direction of John Bowden. Following Bowden's death, Joseph Welland of the Board of First Fruits completed the project. The church was consecrated in 1825.

The Famous Spire

The church's most distinctive feature — its pepper canister-shaped spire — was added during construction and immediately captured the public imagination. Dubliners quickly adopted the nickname, and it has endured for nearly 200 years.

Historic Parishioners

Historic parish residents included Oscar Wilde, Sheridan Le Fanu, the Duke of Wellington, W.B. Yeats, Elizabeth Bowen and Thomas Davis.

Renovation (2010)

Major conservation works were completed in 2010, preserving this Georgian masterpiece for future generations.
