Georgian Architecture of the Pepper Canister

Last updated: 2025-02-28

St Stephen's Church represents one of the finest examples of Greek Revival architecture in Dublin. Designed by John Bowden, it was the last of a distinguished series of Georgian churches built by the Church of Ireland.

Greek Revival Style

The church features classical Greek elements including columns, pediments, and symmetrical proportions. The front façade was carefully designed to terminate the southern vista of Merrion Square.

The Spire

The distinctive pepper canister spire rises above the Dublin skyline, making the church visible from many points across the city centre. Its cylindrical shape with a domed top gives the church its beloved nickname.

Interior Features

The interior features Georgian-era woodwork, plaster ceilings, and stained glass. The 2010 conservation works carefully preserved these original features while updating the building's infrastructure.
